Dr. Markel completed her Ph.D. in School and Clinical Child Psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto, where she also earned her Master’s degree. She completed her predoctoral internship at Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) in the Child and Family Treatment Program as well as the Intergenerational Trauma Treatment Program and the Zero to six psychoeducational assessment and treatment Program. In addition to her work at ROCK, she received clinical training in the Borda and Pirovano hospitals in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at other community mental health agencies and public and private organizations in Toronto, including Surrey Place Centre, the Toronto District School Board, and the OISE Counselling and Psychoeducational Clinic.
For the past 15 years Dr. Markel has been working with children and adolescents experiencing a variety of psychological concerns including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, trauma, stress-related difficulties, social-emotional, behavioural (including ADHD), and adaptive functioning. Dr. Markel strives to conduct therapy in a warm environment to ensure that children, youth, and their families are comfortable on making the progress they desire. She provides empirically supported assessments and treatments from a primarily Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach incorporating Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), Emotion Focused (EFT) and Mindfulness based therapies in both English and Spanish.
